Here are some of our frequently asked questions

What is artist-guided collaborative painting?

Artist-guided collaborative painting is a live, interactive art experience where guests contribute to a custom-designed portrait during your wedding reception under professional guidance.

Is this messy?

No. Our precision paint pens and structured color-coding system ensure a clean, contained, luxury installation.

How is this different from traditional live wedding painting?

Traditional live wedding painting involves one artist painting the scene. Painting to the People invites your guests to actively create the portrait under the guidance of our team.

What if the painting doesn’t get completed during my event?

That is entirely expected. The live installation is designed to evolve throughout the celebration, but final completion takes place in our studio.

Following your event, the artwork returns to our Boulder studio for extensive refinement where we:

  • Balance and refine all color layers

  • Enhance detail and dimensional depth

  • Ensure compositional cohesion

  • Apply archival, UV-protective varnish

The finished piece is delivered as a museum-quality heirloom—vibrant, sealed, and built to endure for decades.

Do you have any special requirements for collaborative painting at the event?

The installation requires a minimum 6’ × 6’ footprint. Larger canvases may require additional space.

We also request:

  • Access to a standard electrical outlet

  • A visible, easily accessible location to encourage natural guest flow

Our team arrives approximately one hour prior to guest arrival to install, prepare materials, and ensure the environment is polished and welcoming.

How do we get our guests to participate in the collaborative painting?

We guide participation actively and professionally throughout the event.

To further support engagement, we recommend:

  • Mentioning the installation on your wedding website

  • Including discreet table signage

  • A brief announcement from your MC

Clear communication ensures guests understand they are invited to contribute.

What is required to secure our date?

Booking is straightforward:

  1. Submit an inquiry form.

  2. We confirm availability.

  3. A $1,000 retainer secures your date.

  4. We schedule your consultation and begin the design process.

Where are you located? Do you travel?

Painting to the People is based in Boulder, Colorado, and we travel nationally and internationally.

For events beyond a two-hour radius, a custom travel proposal is prepared based on location and scope. All travel considerations are outlined transparently prior to contract finalization.

When will we receive the finished artwork?

Completion typically occurs 12–24 weeks following your event, depending on studio volume and compositional complexity.

We remain in communication throughout the refinement process so you are informed at every stage.

Is the experience suitable for children?

The installation is designed primarily for adults and older children.

Younger participants are welcome with direct adult supervision, as precise application is essential to preserving the integrity of the final artwork.

How is this different from ordering a paint-by-number kit?

A DIY kit provides a small canvas and standard hobby materials.

Painting to the People delivers a commissioned, fully facilitated fine-art installation.

Our installations include:

  • Large-format wooden box canvases with internal aluminum reinforcement

  • Professional image conversion structured for collaborative execution

  • Custom-mixed archival liquid acrylic pigments

  • Precision paint application systems

  • On-site facilitation and compositional oversight

  • Extensive post-event studio refinement

  • Archival sealing for long-term preservation

A kit is a product.

This is a commissioned artwork and a fully-facilitated experience.

A collaborative painting might look simple—but when dozens of guests are participating, the difference between chaos and a beautiful finished piece is thoughtful and professional facilitation.

How much does it cost?

Investment varies by canvas size and event scope.
Please visit our Packages page for more information.

How far in advance should we book?

Because each installation requires significant studio preparation and post-event refinement, we accept a limited number of commissions annually.

We recommend inquiring as early as possible, particularly for peak wedding weekends and destination events.
